poem: quiet violence / girlhood, neutered

wash down the mouth

of the loudest girl in class

turn her eyelids inside out and

spin her washer-woman guts into

purification pamphlets. dice her up

and hand her out on street corners –

this is the pinnacle of your burgeoning womanhood

be quieter

be gentle the pride of your daddy’s loins

and the joy

of your mother’s tongue stump.
